1

紙質
Paper-like

E.g.

Bark: Paper bark tree Leaves: Elm-Leaf Grewia, Turn-in-the-wind

Even though you cannot simply rip off the bark of the “paper” bark tree as writing paper, when these thin layers of tree bark stack together they protect the vital organs within the tree trunk! This special bark is the reason why the paper bark tree is resistant to fires and floods.

3

Carpet-like

E.g.

Moss

The texture of moss actually changes with humidity! When the air is dry, the tiny leaves of moss coil inwards to prevent water loss, and are more brittle and rough to the touch. But when rain or mist arrives, moss can quickly absorb the water and expand, turning more vividly green and soft.

5

革質
Leathery

E.g.

Ivy tree, Water pen

Leathery leaves have the same adaptation as the rubbery leaves, but even more thick and firm. Do you know a lot of human inventions and discoveries are inspired by nature? For instance, water resistant materials and coatings have referenced the surface structure of these leathery leaves to improve their functionality.

7

Hairy

E.g.

Blood-red Melastoma

Apart from the soft fuzzy hairs mentioned in texture 2, having harder bristles-like hairs are also very beneficial! These harder hairs act as natural bug repellents by making it difficult for bugs to tread, lay eggs on, or ingest the leaf. If a plant’s fruits evolved hooked hairs, they can also hitch a ride on animal’s fur to disperse their seeds to more faraway locations!

2

Soft and Fuzzy

E.g.

Malabar Melastome, Kochi's beautyberry, Rusty-haired raspberry

Do not underestimate the soft-to-the-touch fuzziness on leaves, they are important to protecting plants! These soft fuzz can actually shield the plant from harsh UV rays from the sun, or act as a net that traps and retains water, preventing the plant from dehydration due to excessive evapotranspiration.

4

Rubbery

E.g.

Nodding Wikstroemia

Some plants may evolve a waxy layer on their leaves called the cuticle. This layer helps plants to retain water in their bodies, thus lowering the chances of dehydration. This layer is also waterproof and can provide physical sun protection.

6

Veiny

E.g.

Grass blades and Bamboo leaves

Usual leaf veins stem outwards from the stalk and the midrib of the leaf. But for plants belonging to the grass family (Poaceae), most species have their veins running parallel to each other, hence the name of the venation is called “parallel veins”.

8

Rough (Sandpaper-like)

E.g.

Sandpaper vine, Oldham’s Saurauia

When you feel the sandpaper-like leaves, what kind of household item could you think of? Apparently when the “scouring pad” had yet to be invented, people of Hong Kong already knew how to utilize these rough leaves to help them scrub and clean cooking wares!
